The Botanic Gardens of the University of Valencia were founded in 1567. For over 200 years it was a field for medicinal plants allied to the study of medicine. In the XVI, XVII and XVIII centuries it was in various places in the city of Valencia until 1802 when the University finally moved the premises to l´Hort de Tramoieres, outside the city walls near the convent of Sant Sebatià, very near the Quart Towers, which are the current premises. Throughout the XIX century, botany classes were held there and tests were carried out on the acclimatization of plants which were of agricultural interest.

During the XX century, the gardens fell into decline until 1987 when the university began an initiative for overall restoration in two phases: the first was the recovery of the gardens themselves which took place between 1989 and 1991; the second phase was the construction of a research unit which was concluded in 2000.

Currently. The Botanical Gardens carry out research into the conservation of rare species, indigenous plants and those in danger of extinction, particularly of Mediterranean flora and the conservation of natural habitats. But more besides, for there is a Didactic Division ,which organizes visits, courses and exhibitions as well as incessant cultural activities such as concerts, cinema, theatre and plastic arts exhibitions, to raise public awareness.
